It’s often assumed that December isn’t a great time to job hunt. Most people consider it the wind down to Christmas but this can actually be a key time to get your job seeking game on! Here’s why...

More time

During December the gift of time can be yours when it comes to actively looking for a new role. Generally speaking, workloads tend to ease off giving you more time to have a real think about the direction you want your career to go in. As well as giving you more time to actively pursue a new role, as things naturally wind down for Christmas, it can be a great time for employers to have the time to thoroughly review applications.

It’s a great time to get your CV updated , our journal Why Candidates Need a Standout CV — Harris Burns, offers a step by step guide to creating a stand-out public sector CV. Your CV is one of your most critical ‘tools’ for your career success. In a world of online portfolios and LinkedIn profiles, it’s easy to assume that the CV is outdated. However, this document does more than list your skills and experience. A CV introduces you to an employer as a reputable professional and highlights your sector experience. In essence, a stand-out CV is critical in determining whether you are successful in getting that first interview or not.

Demonstrate your pro-active approach

The age old “new year new career” means the popular time to job hunt is January, by jumping the gun and being pro-active in December you not only push your application to the front of the queue, but it demonstrates your motivation and determination. Creating the perfect CV and applying for jobs can be time consuming so you have pipped others to the post who often leave it until January to start this task.

Networking opportunities

The holiday period is often a great time to network. Virtual meet ups with old friends and colleagues can lead to conversations about careers and job opportunities. Likewise virtual conferences can give you the chance to meet local organisations which could give you an insight into their recruitment plans.

Less Competition

Generally, there is less competition for jobs than in January. As traditionally people tend to leave it until the new year, it gives you even more chance for your CV and application to stand out to a perspective employer. It’s a key time to speak with recruitment companies and have the time to really go through your career requirements with your consultant.

In the meantime, its also important to relax and enjoy that much needed family time. We wish you a fabulous run up to the festive period and all the best with your December job hunt !
